Relf, Dixon lead Miss. St. pass Ole Miss 41-27

Published by admin under Uncategorized

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP)—Coaches always say they take one game at a time, but the clock in Mississippi State’s locker room tells a different story.
That timepiece had been counting down to the Egg Bowl matchup against No. 20 Mississippi since first-year coach Dan Mullen took over last winter, and when it hit zero the Bulldogs put on quite the show.
Anthony Dixon rushed for 133 yards and set the school single-season rushing mark, Chris Relf rushed for 131 yards and accounted for three touchdowns and the Bulldogs manhandled the Rebels 41-27 on Saturday.

“This program is on the rise,” Mullen said, “maybe to the contrary of what some others are saying around the state.”
It was the most points scored by the Bulldogs (5-7, 3-5 SEC) in the 106-year-old series since a 41-14 victory in 1917, and the most Ole Miss (8-4, 4-4) has given up this season.
The Egg Bowl was supposed to be a victory lap for the Rebels, who appeared on their way to their second straight nine-win season for the first time since 1961-62, second place in the SEC West and a balmy bowl appearance somewhere in central Florida.
Dixon and Relf had other plans, pushing Mississippi State to more than four wins for just the second time since 2000 by accounting for 64 percent of the offense. The Bulldogs treated the regular-season finale like a bowl and made the home team winners for the 10th time in 11 games.
“In a rivalry game like this, for those 3 hours you’ve got to want it,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said.
And it was clear in the second half once Relf and Dixon got rolling that Mississippi State wanted it more.
Relf has been Tyson Lee’s backup and shared playing time all season, but was often given the short hook after mistakes. This time he played most of the second half and dominated Ole Miss with 131 yards rushing, averaging 10 yards per carry on his first 10 and 8.7 overall.
The run specialist also stung the Rebels with touchdown passes of 2 and 34 yards, rallying the Bulldogs from a 13-10 halftime deficit.
The second scoring pass—a 34-yard lob to Chad Bumphis, who broke three tackles on the play—came on fourth and 9. He also mined the edge of the Ole Miss defensive front on the option for several big runs, clinching the game with a 10-yard power rush with 10:56 left.
“Chris got it rolling and got a feel for what was going on and we were able to run the football,” Mullen said. “I think they had 11 guys on the line of scrimmage and we were able to run the football.”
Mississippi State’s defense set the tone early, stopping Ole Miss short of the goal-line and forcing two field goals in the first half. The young Bulldogs secondary finished off the job in the second half when Corey Broomfield returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown and Charles Mitchell picked off his second pass of the game.
The Rebels’ only success came on long pass plays for touchdowns—20 yards to Shay Hodge, who became the first receiver at Ole Miss with 1,000 yards in a season (1,023), 48 yards to Markeith Summers and 52 yards to Dexter McCluster.
The Bulldogs mostly held McCluster in check, allowing just 82 yards rushing to snap a four-game streak of 100-plus against SEC opponents. And though Jevan Snead finished with 275 yards passing, the three interceptions were costly.
The Bulldogs carried the golden egg-shaped trophy given to the winner to the end zone and celebrated with fans after the victory, dancing as a group to “Who Let the Dogs Out.”
Ole Miss, on the other hand, got out of Starkville as quickly as possible. The buses pulled away from the stadium a half hour after Mullen saluted the crowd over the public address system.
“It is a sick feeling,” Nutt said. “It is not what we planned.”
Dixon finished the season with 1,391 yards in 11 games, eight more than James Johnson’s 1998 record set over 13 games, and now owns every significant rushing record at Mississippi State.
His dive to catch the pylon for a 2-yard score got the Bulldogs offense rolling and set the tone for a running game that couldn’t be stopped. Mississippi State had 317 of its 412 total yards on the ground.
“I had a lot of fun,” Dixon said. “We beat our rival. I knew a bunch of them dudes on the other side. We were talking back and forth the whole game.”

Crochet Ugg

Published by admin under Uncategorized

These ugg boots are knit, rather than suede or sheep’s skin, giving them a slouchy look.
The words ’slouch’ and ’style’ do not belong together, nor do the words ’slouch’ and ‘boot’ or ‘classic tall ugg boots’ and ‘fashionable’.
When I see these boots, I feel like the mother of some young, tortured emo kid. I should warn you, I’m taking on the big powers that be, here. Oprah recently promoted these boots as one of her favourite things of 2007. Now, I don’t want to piss off the O, some of Oprah’s favourite things are cankles.
I would be driven nuts by these slouchy things drooping around my calves. I want to say they’re warm, but shouldn’t a boot be snug to properly insulate against the cold?
Possibly for some kind of knit moccasin shortage, going on the Oprah Winfrey show, or smuggling small items across the border.
I may not be a famous talk show host with massive reach and influence but I think the slouch ugg classic tall has taken the ugg boots classic tall to uglier and the ’slouch’ to even further depths of fashion hell.

Touched by NC girl’s death, Shaq pays for funeral

Published by admin under Uncategorized

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Basketball star Shaquille O’Neal(notes) paid for the funeral of a 5-year-old North Carolina girl after being moved by national news coverage of the case of Shaniya Davis, who police say was kidnapped and killed.
The Cleveland Cavaliers player was touched by the stories he saw and got in touch with the family to see what he could do to help, a spokeswoman for O’Neal said Thursday.
More than 2,000 people attended the girl’s funeral Sunday. Her body was found Nov. 16 beside a rural road.
Her mother, Antionette Davis, who had reported the child missing six days earlier, is charged with human trafficking and child abuse involving prostitution. Mario McNeill is charged with murder, rape and kidnapping in the case.
“I was sitting at home watching it on the news and the story brought a tear to my eye,” O’Neal told The Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper.
Corey Breece, of Rogers and Breece Funeral Home, which handled the service, declined to tell the Fayetteville Observer newspaper how much it cost but added that a child’s funeral “averages around $4,500.”
A man who answered the phone at the funeral home Thursday told the AP that only the owner could comment and that he was away.
Shaniya Davis’ father, Bradley Lockhart, and his family had set up a trust fund in memory of Shaniya to help raise money to pay for the funeral. Lockhart was not available to talk Thursday, said a man who answered the phone at his home.
O’Neal is recovering from a shoulder injury that has sidelined him for six straight games since getting hurt Nov. 12 against Miami.

Roadshow: Highway traveling could surge over Thanksgiving

Published by admin under Uncategorized

Here’s something to give thanks for: Getting out of the Bay Area this holiday weekend may turn out to be unseasonably easy.
With fewer people at the airports, gas prices slipping below $3, and many major freeway construction projects in the rearview mirror, travelers can expect a smoother Thanksgiving getaway, even though a lot more of us will be hitting the road than a year ago.
The best advice, whether traveling by car, train or plane: Leave before noon Wednesday, avoid returning late Sunday — one of the toughest travel days of the year — and pack a good attitude.
“We encourage patience and courtesy,” said San Jose airport spokesman David Vossbrink, in a comment echoed by the Highway Patrol, traffic reporters and other travelers. “A little good cheer can do wonders to reduce stress and make the trip better for everyone.”
Fewer people will be at the airports than in 2008, and the hassles may be minimal. But while the passenger count may be down as much as 10 percent at San Jose and Oakland airports, AAA predicts a 9 percent increase in travel by car this year in California.
Drivers will travel an average of 664 miles over the four-day holiday weekend, paying as much as 11 percent less for a motel room than a year ago and 17 cents less for a gallon of gas than around Labor Day.
The most hopeful news is on the highway. Once-horrible bottlenecks have been unclogged by road widening east of Tracy on Interstate 205, near Pacheco Pass at highways 152 and 156, in Castro Valley on I-238, and on I-80 near Fairfield.
“Travelers should find a much more friendly I-205 due to the extra lanes,” said Andrew Chesley, executive director of the San Joaquin Council of Governments. That freeway was widened last summer from two to three lanes in both directions. “We have seen about a 15-minute reduction in travel time.”
In addition, paving on I-80 near Colfax, east of Sacramento, has been halted for the winter, and lanes in that stretch have been widened from 11 to 12 feet.
Also, 19th Avenue in San Francisco will remain open this weekend south of Golden Gate Park, as city crews suspend work for the holiday on the Muni line.
Another reason this year may go smoother: The memory of painful holiday trips of past years has been seared into our consciousness.
“I’m definitely not returning Sunday,” said Joan Marshall, who will be heading home to Redwood City next Tuesday from a weeklong camping trip in Joshua Tree National Park. “Been there, done that. Ugh!”
Ditto Los Gatos attorney Mandy McClellan, whose family is bound for Bodega Bay and will be leaving around 1 p.m. Wednesday instead of 4 p.m., as in previous years.
“On several occasions in the past we encountered horrific traffic when traveling on Wednesday,” she said, still shuddering about being at a standstill on 101 after the San Rafael Bridge for what seemed like hours.
Another tip: Dial 511 before you head out the door. Larry Tom of San Martin did that a couple of years ago, checking the Thanksgiving route to Moraga. The most direct route, via Interstate 680, was 30 minutes longer than the alternative path on I-880 to I-580. So he took the longer route and “had a very smooth trip, avoiding all those turkeys on the road.”
If you’re flying, be sure to heed airport warnings — arrive 90 minutes early and make sure the name on your boarding pass precisely matches the name on your ID. If it doesn’t, you could face a longer wait as you’re asked for more information, but you should still be able to board your plane.
All three Bay Area airports will offer drivers cheaper, long-term parking rates in short-term lots if long-term spaces are filled. San Jose expects parking will be available at all of its lots, while long-term lots in Oakland and San Francisco could fill up Wednesday night.
Thanksgiving is one of the deadliest holidays for California drivers, with 33 killed last year. The Highway Patrol will have every available officer on the roads, giving special attention to Interstate 5 from Los Angeles to the Oregon border, I-15 from Bakersfield to Nevada, I-80 from the Bay Area to the Sierra and I-40.
They’ll focus on drunken drivers and on those who are not buckled up. Last year, one in three of those killed on state roads over Thanksgiving wasn’t strapped in.
“Wear your seat belt,” said CHP Officer Sarah Jackson. “It is your best defense against a DUI driver.”

South Koreans to get Apple’s iPhone this week

Published by admin under Uncategorized

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Apple Inc’s iPhone is coming to South Korea this week, a local carrier announced Sunday, bringing the iconic communications device to one of the world’s most sophisticated mobile phone markets.
KT Corp. began accepting orders for the iPhone both online and in stores Sunday and service will start Nov. 28 as part of an official launch, said Alice Park, a spokeswoman for the country’s second-largest mobile carrier.
The announcement ends a long wait in South Korea, which has lagged behind other countries in Asia in introducing the sleek smartphone that has grabbed headlines around the world and solidified Apple’s status as a purveyor of cutting-edge consumer electronics.
The South Korean market is dominated by domestic manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., which are also big players overseas. Speculation has focused on how South Korean consumers, known for favoring the local makers, will react to the iPhone’s introduction.
Steve Park, Apple’s spokesman in Seoul, confirmed KT’s announcement, but declined further comment and would offer no sales projections.
The iPhone made its formal debut in China late last month via local partner China Unicom Ltd. It went on sale in Japan last year and is also available in India and Australia, as well as other countries in the region.
Worldwide the iPhone is available in 86 countries and territories and will be soon in four more, according to Apple’s Web site. Despite KT’s announcement, the site still did not mention South Korea.
“We are thrilled to bring iPhone to South Korea,” Kim Woo-sik, CEO of KT’s personal customer group, said in a press release. “Our customers will enjoy the power and benefits of using the revolutionary iPhone on KT’s 3G network.”
The iPhone’s introduction was delayed by regulatory hurdles, the last of which was overcome on Wednesday when the Korea Communications Commission approved the granting of a business license to Apple to offer so-called location based services.
Location-based services include functions such as maps and direction finders that are included on the iPhone. South Korean law requires companies that provide such applications to obtain government permission.
SK Telecom Co., South Korea’s largest mobile carrier, has also been in discussions with Apple about offering the iPhone. Spokeswoman Lauren Kim said Sunday that SK Telecom had not made any decision regarding the iPhone.
